Industry experts expect security attacks to evolve in 2012

2012 is expected to usher in new security vulnerabilities in the form of malware and cyberwarfare, according to industry experts.

IDG News' Lucian Constantin recently reported that security research director Rik Ferguson believes the trend of attacks and breaches seen in 2011 is expected to gain momentum and continue in the new year.

The rise of the Stuxnet worm is one example of cyber-espionage that has the capabilities of disrupting a government's network. In an interview with IDG, security vendor Gerry Egan said sophisticated attacks such as these will continue next year in the form of powerful variants of malware.

"We have to be on a new state of alert to safeguard our assets and be better prepared to respond when the threat strikes,"  said CEO of a management solutions provider Jeff Hudson, Constantin reported.

Cybersecurity is one of several IT trends expected to shape the industry in 2012. A recent study conducted by an internet protocol services provider suggested the advancement of distributed denial-of-service plots and other attacks will cause companies to bolster their security defenses to protect their infrastructure.
