Since cyber security remains crucial for organizations of all sizes, the Department of Energy recently released a new guide to help protect the public and private sectors against attacks.

According to the roadmap, an overall security culture must be developed and integrated with reliability practices to ensure its effectiveness. Organizations are also encouraged to assess and monitor risk, which allows them to properly address issues if they are to occur.

The DOE said in its statement that other strategies to protect against cyber threats are to develop and implement protective measures to help reduce risks. "In this strategy, new protective measures are developed and implemented to reduce system risks to an acceptable level as security risks - including vulnerabilities and emerging threats - are identified or anticipated," the agency said.

Companies also should manage incidents through post analysis to help learn from their attack, as well as sustain their security improvements over the course of time. According to the DOE, organizations should remain aggressive with their security goals.

A report conducted by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance highlighted that the United States must develop greater cyber security intelligence tactics, including policies and greater collaboration among agencies and businesses.
