Samsung Galaxy S smartphones reach milestone as demand for devices grows
Thursday, October 20, 2011
The demand for
smartphones worldwide continues to grow and consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung may be in line to go head-to-head with the popular iPhone from Apple.
The company recently announced that its Galaxy S line of smartphones have officially reached 30 million units sold worldwide.
The original Galaxy S has been on the market since 2010 and has achieved 20 million units sold, while its successor - the Galaxy S II - has achieved half of that total already despite recently being released to the U.S. market later than other regions.
The success of the devices are due to their large, super AMOLED touchscreens and fast user interface.
By 2017, the number of worldwide
smartphone sales are projected to reach more than 1.6 billion, according to research by Global Industry Analysts.
With so many smartphones in the hands of employees, organizations have been encouraged to develop a
mobile device management policy to protect their interests. According to InformationWeek's Michael Belak, businesses should establish which devices they want to permit and then implement an IT infrastructure to support them.
