Certain themes, including cloud computing technology, are expected to take place in the IT industry as 2011 comes to a close.

A recent CIOL report suggested the use of personal computers will take a backseat to the rise of personal clouds.

"Consumers will increasingly provide new sales channels for vendors to sell into the enterprise, so the role of the CIO has to change in order to deal with 'proliferative innovation' - technological innovation driven from all parts of the organization," said the CIOL report.

The news provider also indicated security solutions will take on added importance in 2012. The report suggested that businesses prepare for cyber threats as if their infrastructure has already been breached.

Another key IT development expected to take place next year is the adoption of tablets among the enterprise, according to CIOL.

Tablets and cloud computing have also been named as strategic technologies by research firm Gartner. They are two of 10 highlighted developments for 2012 that will have a significant impact in the near future as organizations worldwide identify how they fit into their operating needs.
