WAN optimization helped solve several IT issues in 2011

The use of wide area networks in the past year has helped businesses improve their performance in a variety of ways.

A recent TechTarget report by Tessa Parmenter highlighted some of the success stories associated with WAN solutions, including one that addressed the number of expanded web applications.

"Fortunately, some vendors smartened up their WAN optimization platforms to include packet- and flow-based monitoring to give network managers a fighting chance at rectifying poor Web application performance," wrote Parmenter.

The reporter also indicated that despite the use of virtual private networking technology, some high-profile security breaches occurred in the past year that bankrupted some companies. These attacks are an example of how businesses must be prepared against such incidents.

Parmenter added that the use of cloud computing, internet connectivity and a transition to internet protocol version 6 were several "breakthrough" technologies introduced by vendors in 2011. The World IPv6 Day also shed light on the importance of switching from IPv4 and allowed companies to test the new model.

Some of the other benefits associated with WAN optimization include greater energy efficiency. According to a Computer Technology Review report, the technology promotes green operations because of its consolidation capabilities.
