Upcoming Apple OS rumored to feature cloud integration

Rumors of a new cloud service from Apple have circulated for some time now. And the recent release of a developer build version of the company's Mac operating system has only further fueled speculation.

According to French technology blog Consomac, Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.7, or Lion, includes a feature that lets users upgrade their MobileMe accounts to a new cloud service, dubbed Castle.

Consomac reported that it couldn't find any reference to Castle in the system preferences, suggesting that it might be a codename for a service Apple is not yet ready to unveil. However, given that MobileMe is a service that lets Apple users sync their email, calendars and other files across devices, it would make sense to deploy it as a cloud computing service.

While Apple hasn't confirmed the rumor, the news provider said it is likely that the company will make an announcement at Worldwide Developers Conference in June, when the new OS is expected to launch.

The speculation of the new cloud service comes on the heels of a recent rumor that Apple purchased the domain iCloud.com last week. According to several reports, Apple bought the domain from Swedish cloud services provider Xcerion.
