The cloud will be even more critical during the next decade

In the next decade, there will be 10 technologies that will help shape the world, all of which may be a more effective means of providing people with information.

According to a recent Network World report, Cisco's chief technologist for the company's Internet Business Solutions Group, Dave Evans, said that cloud computing is one of these technologies. By 2020, Cisco predicts that one-third of all data will be stored or transferred through the cloud.

Additionally, Evans said the massive amounts of data known as zettaflood will be kept in the cloud, according to the report.

"Already, the cloud is powerful enough to help us communicate through real-time language translation, increase our knowledge from access to powerful supercomputers such as Wolfram Alpha and improve our health using computing platforms like IBM's Watson in new ways," said Evans.

While the cloud has been experiencing a rapid adoption rate, spending on the technology has also been on the rise. According to Gartner, companies are expected to spend $89 billion on public cloud computing in 2011 and $177 billion by 2015 on the technology.
