As more companies turn to cloud computing, the technology is changing the way consumers access information as well.

According to a recent Asbury Park Press report, the cloud is changing the way people use the internet. Vladamir Zwass, a professor of computer science at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey, told the news provider the adoption of smartphones, tablets and laptops make it easier for consumers to access information stored in the cloud.

Citing a Forrester Research study, 46 million people in the United States have used a cloud service and, according to the research firm, this number is expected to jump to 196 million by 2016.

The cloud is being used by several small and large businesses for many benefits. For example, owner of creative services business Core Studios, John Hansen, uses the technology to cut costs his IT infrastructure, the report stated.

"The overhead is able to be kept very small and a lot of it is due to the fact of these cloud services," Hansen said.

This year, public cloud spending is projected to reach $89 billion and grow to $177 billion by 2015, according to research by Gartner.
