Enterprise
cloud computing services provider Salesforce.com recently announced it has completed an acquisition of Ruby-based Platform-as-a-Service provider Heroku in a move to strengthen its public
cloud offering.
According to Salesforce.com, the acquisition will allow it to support both of cloud computing's major language - Ruby and Java - and also accelerate enterprise adoption of Cloud 2 apps for real-time mobile and social platforms.
Salesforce.com CEO and chairman Marc Benioff said, "Heroku is the leading Ruby application platform and Ruby is the language of the future, driving the next generation of cloud applications that are real-time, social and mobile. With Heroku, our platform can become the cornerstone of the next-generation of cloud computing."
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Salesforce.com may have misjudged the growth of Ruby among developers, however. According to a recent report by Tiobe Software, the use of Ruby actually decreased in the last year, sliding 0.87 percent between 2009 and 2010.
