The IT industry has been impacted in recent years by the rise of cloud computing and the technology gained steam as a viable disaster recovery solution in 2011.

According to a recent report by InformationWeek's Art Wittmann, 34 percent of IT professionals surveyed in 2010 said they used or considered the cloud for their disaster recovery and businesses continuity needs. In the past year, the number of organizations that adopted the technology for these strategies grew to 43 percent.

In 2011, the overall number of businesses that adopted the cloud also grew. According to the news provider, 18 percent of companies said they used the technology in 2009, compared to 31 percent in 2010 and 33 percent in 2011.

A separate study conducted by InformationWeek Reports also showed that the adoption of cloud computing for disaster recovery is on the rise. Of those surveyed, nearly 25 percent indicated they had already used the cloud for their recovery and business continuity initiatives, while nearly 30 percent plan to do so in the next two years.
