Red Hat looks to expand PaaS offering with Makara acquisition

Open source software vendor Red Hat recently announced it has acquired cloud software provider Makara - a move that Red Hat says will expand the Platform-as-a-Service offering of its Cloud Foundations portfolio.

Red Hat says its JBoss Enterprise Middleware infrastructure can be integrated with the Makara platform to provide users with additional monitoring, scaling and rollback tools. This will allow organizations to manage applications on both private and public clouds with ease, the company stated.

"Cloud Foundations is about enabling customers and developers to have an easy on-ramp to the cloud. With the addition of Makara, we aim to further simplify application deployment and management," said Paul Cormier, Red Hat president of products and technologies.

Red Hat did not disclose the terms of the acquisition, but according to a CNET report, the company has had mixed success with acquisitions in the past. For example, CNET writer Dave Rosenberg noted it took several years following Red Hat's purchase of JBoss to realize any profitability.
