cloud computing, activity streams, near-field communications payment technology, wireless power and internet-connected TV are some of the technologies named by research firm Gartner in its Peak of Inflated Expectations category.
The 2011 Emerging Technologies Hype Cycle provides researchers with insight into more than 1,900 technologies, which are placed into 76 distinct groups. The annual study by Gartner has been used since 1995 and tracks technologies that organizations should adopt to maximize their value, Gartner said in a press release.
According to vice president Jackie Fenn, the continuous interest in cloud computing, social media and mobile technologies are the themes from this year's study.
"Private cloud computing has taken over from more general cloud computing at the top of the peak, while cloud/web platforms have fallen toward the Trough of Disillusionment since 2010," said Fenn.
A majority of organizations have identified private cloud computing as critical part of their operations. According to a study conducted by Evolven Software and Forrester Research, 62 percent of companies surveyed said they have at least one private cloud project in place this year.
