Popularity of cloud computing stimulates microprocessor technology
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Every year brings new innovations in computer science and technology, and the current trend of
cloud services is causing an enormous ripple in the computing world. Demand for
mobile devices and
smartphones with cloud technology is skyrocketing, and the microprocessor industry is beginning to create microchips of incredible potential.
According to IHS, by 2015, market spending on
cloud computing is expected to reach 110 billion dollars, nearly five times the amount recorded in 2010. Major companies like IBM and Intel are scrambling to design state of the art microchips that can be incorporated into laptops,
tablets, or any cloud-enabled device. IBM and GlobalFoundries recently approved a deal that started construction on a 4.6 billion dollar processor factory in New York. The facility will incorporate IBM's silicon technology to provide increased server speed and processing.
Cloud computing is all about promoting access to a wealth of information in the cloud - with extremely powerful microprocessors, any cloud device will be able to instantly download data that would normally take a very long time. As the definition of cloud computing continues to evolve, so will the microchips that accompany it.
