New ideas for WAN technology

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Wide area network (WAN) technology is essential to the implementation of cloud computing. Large corporations, small businesses, and even government agencies use WANs to transmit data to employees and clients from any location in the world. The increased demand for managed services like voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) is causing many businesses to upgrade from a local network to a WAN, and the unique benefits associated with such a change are endless.

One example is the inclusion of cloud services in naval vessels. The U.S. Navy will upgrade specific ships with advanced WAN optimization. Such a network would centralize detailed information on engines, navigation, and other important components of a ship, and the computer could adapt to any environment. The ship would essentially become a giant "smartboat." With a WAN, if the ship were to experience any sort of malfunction or failure, data on the situation could be accessed from anywhere, and the problem may even be solved remotely.

New incorporation of WAN networking is at the forefront of the cloud industry today, and provides a great opportunity for more seamless connections to the cloud.
