Microsoft CEO pushes for cloud computing in energy industry

Highlighting the environmental benefits afforded by cloud computing, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently urged the energy industry to adopt the technology to help address growing oil and power needs, CNN reports.

Ballmer, who was speaking at IHS CERA's energy conference, insisted that cloud computing can improve energy exploration and production.

In addition to reducing technology costs, cloud computing can enhance efficiency for energy companies. For example, the technology can be used to connect oil well development teams from around the world, enabling them to share information instantly and expedite the development process.

"It clear that we're not going to be able to conserve our way into our energy future," Ballmer said. "The task will be to invent new ways to fuel factories, vehicles, homes and cities. It will be underpinned by information technology."

Many businesses have found they can reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs by deploying cloud services. A recent study by WSP Environment & Energy found some businesses using cloud computing produce 95 percent less carbon emissions than other companies.
