Future of cloud computing looks bright

This year will likely be viewed as a success for cloud computing technology as more companies worldwide have adopted its associated services. Cloud computing expert Joshua McKenty sees this momentum moving the industry forward in the coming months.

Beginning in 2012, the cloud is expected to "change the world" with an event that would not have been possible in previous years, much like how the internet transformed the way people communicate.

"Beginning with developing nations, non-profits and organizations that lack big budgets and need seamless, accessible and low-cost collaboration, the cloud will bring major advances to the people and organizations that are working on change on a global scale," said McKenty.

The expert also expects "true" cloud computing standards to be established beginning next year, as well as three types of acquisitions. These include established companies purchasing promising businesses, acquiring defunct organizations strictly for talent and partnering with new vendors to grow their brand.

One future benefit associated with the cloud is its immense energy and waste reduction capabilities. According to a study sponsored by a telecommunications company for the Carbon Disclosure Project, U.S. companies with a cloud infrastructure that earn more than $1 billion in yearly revenue can save more than $12 billion in energy costs annually by 2020.
