Current CIOs must evolve with changing technology trends

In the fast-moving world of technology, what worked several years ago is not the case today. According to a recent Computerworld report, chief information officers now must operate more like chief executive officers to be successful.

"Today, CIOs are operating in a completely different world," said Computerworld's Christopher O'Malley. "Everything moves at a blazing velocity - and CIOs get no accolades for merely procuring efficiently or avoiding outages."

Current CIOs must focus on business priorities and challenges and implement cloud computing services to meet this demand. According to O'Malley, CIOs need to develop a competitive strategy to succeed in a market, leverage a flexible IT infrastructure and establish a working culture that always strives to improve to achieve business success.

While O'Malley believes CIOs must leverage cloud computing technology, many officials appear to share this sentiment. According to a recent study by CA Technologies, 54 percent of CIOs surveyed said the cloud has helped them concentrate on business innovation and strategy.

Of those surveyed, more than 70 percent of respondents indicated they view cloud computing as a viable option to pursue other management roles.
