Confusion setting in for businesses regarding cloud computing

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

A recent study conducted by a major services provider discovered that confusion is still bothering companies regarding implementation of cloud computing.

Of those responding to the survey, 57 percent were unsure if the cloud was right for them and, if so, which cloud-based solution was best. A significant number of respondents were also unsure of the best method for implementing the cloud within their current IT infrastructure.

On the positive side, 91 percent of responding companies stated they prefer either a hybrid or blended model of the cloud.

"It's clear the vast majority of businesses understand the different options that are available," said Nathan Marke, the chief technology officer at the company conducting the study. "However, with so much hype around cloud and its various incarnations, these organizations don't know which model is right for them and how to go about implementing it."

Marke recommended that, as a first step for assessing the cloud, companies run an audit on their current IT infrastructure in order to determine the interdependence of various structures. This process can go a long way toward determining the best cloud-based solution to adopt.

As more companies decide on cloud solutions, the technology's market continues to grow. IDC recently predicted the public cloud market will be worth $29.5 billion by 2015.
