In 2011, much debate took place regarding the future of cloud computing. But moving forward, it is expected to evolve in several new areas as more companies become familiar with the technology.

Network Computing recently reported that the trend of cloud computing storage success is expected to continue in 2012 as more businesses turn to these systems for this purpose.

Infrastructure analyst for Tier1 Research Carl Brooks indicated that "cloud gateways" will provide customers with access to public cloud storage and local systems in an automated way. The enterprise is expected to adopt hybrid cloud services that can be shifted between different tiers, according to the news source.

"At this point, customers are usually fine with not knowing much about their infrastructure," said Brooks, Network Computing reported. "2012 will see them flip the script and hold their vendors hostage for improved solutions, instead of the other way around."

The benefits of cloud computing continue to improve as the technology matures. A recent study of more than 3,500 IT professionals conducted by independent research firm TNS, more than 80 percent indicated their organizations have experienced significant cost benefits since adopting a cloud infrastructure.
