As companies worldwide must meet ever-changing demands placed on their IT departments to address business needs, cloud computing may hold the key.

A recent Computerworld UK report indicated that chief executive of CA Technologies Bill McCracken said at the CA World conference in Las Vegas that cloud computing can help organizations meet the mounting economic pressures and increased competition.

"Chief executives have always felt they know what they want to do but that they just cannot make the change happen fast enough,"McCracken said at the event, according to Computerworld. "Often IT is holding them back, and you can see that with chief information officers spending much less time in the role than their C-level counterparts."

McCracken also said that the cloud is no longer a distant concept, it is being utilized in all IT areas, Computerworld reported.

A recent study sponsored by a telecommunications company for the Carbon Disclosure Project revealed that cloud computing offers significant cost savings and energy reduction. According to its research, U.S. companies that use the cloud and earn more than $1 billion in yearly revenue can save more than $12 billion in energy costs annually by 2020.
