Cloud computing driving healthier job market

Friday, September 03, 2010

Even while much of the global economy struggles to create new jobs, the technology industry has shown signs of life, driven largely by innovations in cloud computing.

CNET recently reported cloud providers are seeking those with the specific skills that combine infrastructure knowledge with data center architecture and operations skills. Knowledge of server, network and storage, and the application of converged infrastructures to virtualized environments are common base requisites for system vendors.

Amazon Web Services, for example, recently listed 181 jobs in one week in the U.S. alone. Rackspace, the second largest IaaS provider, had 175 jobs available in the U.S. as well.

The IT market grew 44 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2010, fueled by high demand for providers with expertise in Google App Engine and mobile development skills, the report states.

According to a recent TechServe Alliance report, IT employment increased by more than 63,000 jobs in July, or 1.7 percent, since January, when technology hiring began to rebound.
