CIOs surveyed regarding their cloud computing knowledge

According to a recent study conducted by the KPMG Sourcing Advisory, IT services providers and advisers were surveyed regarding their customers' knowledge of cloud computing from a scale of one to five, with five representing "very skilled," CIO reports.

Of the IT advisers surveyed regarding managing and governing cloud initiatives, their customers received an average score of nearly 1.7, while providers distributed a score of nearly 2.2. For cloud sourcing and structuring cloud engagements, advisers gave their customers an average score of 1.8, while providers gave a score of approximately 2.4, according to the study.

The low scores may account for the rapid ascension the technology has experienced, according to Stan Lepeak, director of KPMG Sourcing Advisory Global Research.

"Most of the cloud computing focus has been around long-term futures, not scrutinizing real short-term opportunities and deciphering the reality from vendor and service provider claims," Lepeak told CIO.

Despite being a relatively new technology, cloud computing is becoming commonplace among more companies. According to a study by Evolven Software and Forrester Research, 62 percent of responding companies have at least one private cloud project in place this year.
